October 10, 1930 - March 30, 2014
John A. Glover passed peacefully in Palo Alto, California on March 30, 2014 following a lengthy illness and hospitalization for congestive heart failure and dementia. He was 83 years old.
John was born in Edgefield, South Carolina on October 10, 1930, the youngest son of the late Sam and Della (Ross) Glover. He lived in Brooklyn New York from 1955 until he relocated to East Palo Alto (a place he always said reminded him of Georgia) in 2006. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving honorably from 1951 until his honorable discharge in 1959. He was a housepainter by trade, and also ran a social club in Brooklyn New York from 1996 until his full retirement.
John was joined in holy matrimony to the former Florice Ray Butler of Prattville, Alabama on June 16, 1958, and widowed upon her death on November 4, 2005. John and Flo made their home in Brooklyn, New York and raised two daughters, Ruthie Renee and Pennye Ardell, and one son, McCluster, to adulthood. He was a loving, supportive father who taught his children love for family, wisdom and pragmatism, above all things. John's attitude about life\'s challenges was that he even though might be down, he wasn't yet out. He eschewed fret and worry, choosing instead to focus on the joys of living. John managed to see the good in everyone. He was always there to support his family and friends. He never interfered or imposed his opinions on anyone, but quietly gave loving, wise advice when asked and gladly lent a hand to others when it was most needed. Although not affiliated with a specific church, John was raised in the Baptist faith. He had an extremely private, yet firm, faith in God that he lived through deeds and quiet time spent reading his Bible.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Flo; his parents; his sisters Mattie Jefferson, Estelle Glover, Sallie Rivers, and Ruth McKie, his brothers Larry, Earnest, Whitfield, Sam, Lincoln and Leroy Glover; and his half-brothers Ollie and John Hammonds. He leaves to mourn his passing his three children, Renee Glover (and son-in-law Derek) Chantler of East Palo Alto, California; Pennye Glover of Brooklyn, New York, and McCluster Williams of Middleton, New York; his grandchildren Taneisha, Michael (and granddaughter-in-law Nicole) and Mandisa Berg, his great-grandson Michael Berg, Jr.; three sisters, Irie and Katherine Jefferson and Ruby Sanders of Washington, DC, and countless other relatives and friends.
